For this independence day weekend, we’re talking about iconic American guitars and the people who helped make them famous. We can’t get to all the great guitars made here in the states, so we picked five instruments that you’ll recognize by their look and their sound: the Gibson Les Paul, 355 and Flying V and the Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster. We’ll listen to five American musicians who have made their name on these instruments and marvel at how they took an inanimate object of wood and metal and gave it life.

The Fender Telecaster has long been the guitar of choice for country, bluegrass, rockabilly and rock, but it’s not usually thought of as a blues instrument.
